Caribbean Microfinance Capacity Building Project II (CARIB CAP II)

Posted on: January 8th, 2015 by Melissa Johnson

The Caribbean Microfinance Capacity Building Project II (CARIB CAP II ) provides institutional capacity building for thirteen (13) Caribbean Microfinancial Institutions (MFIs), and consolidates the Caribbean Micro Finance Alliance as an organisation providing services to the microfinance sector in the English-speaking Caribbean. The project supports improved knowledge sharing and dissemination about the industry across the region.

Historically, microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the English-speaking Caribbean have not performed well and have been institutionally weak compared to their counterparts in the rest of the region. In recognition of these challenges, in 2008 the Multilateral Investment Fund, the European Union and the Caribbean Development Bank came together in a historic partnership in microfinance to provide funding to MFIs in the English-speaking Caribbean in a regional programme – the Caribbean Microfinance Capacity Building Programme (CARIB-CAP). That project which was completed in 2011, aimed to improve the financial performance and outreach of MFIs in the region. CARIB CAP II is a continuation that is aimed at building on those achievements to create a knowledge-sharing ecosystem across the Caribbean.

Development Options served as manager for both programmes, spearheading initiatives such as the Caribbean Microfinance Forum to build regional knowledge sharing among practitioners.

Project Partners: CARIB CAP II is jointly funded by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB ), the European Union (EU), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and Citi Foundation
