Posted on: January 20th, 2015 by Melissa Johnson No Comments

Over one thousand persons with disabilities are to participate in a socio-economic survey, the results of which will be used to support initiatives that will improve their lives and that of their families and communities.

The survey will be conducted by social development company, Development Options Ltd., (DO) under contract with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, an agency of the Ministry of Labour & Social Security.

The first of its kind for Jamaica, the survey aims to provide a demographic profile of persons with disabilities and document their social and economic realities.

From the end of January to March 1, 2015, persons registered with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities will be interviewed.

The survey will capture the realities of a cross section of the community of persons with disabilities, including those residing in institutions or private care facilities. Questions will address matters related to health, education, income and household expenditure. Caregivers and family members are urged to participate in the completion of the questionnaire as needed.

Development Options advises that interviewees are being contacted by telephone to schedule a suitable time for interviewers to visit their residences. All interviewers will have an identification card, which will be displayed when visiting. All information provided will be treated with strict confidence.

The socio-economic Survey for Persons with Disabilities is a project of the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities. Development Options designs and manages development initiatives which support increased and improved socio-economic opportunities for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable communities.
